Undergoing Formation
Formation of the clergy is a major aspect in the Vincentian mission. And so, we take the formation of our own student very significant, hence they will be inevitably involved in our apostolate of forming priests and religious.
There are five principal stages in our process of formation, and they are made possible in our four formation houses; namely, James Cahalan Memorial Postulancy, St. Justin Seminary, Blessed Ghebre Michael House, and the Theology House.
|
James Cahalan Memorial Postulancy
The postulancy is at Amakom in Oraifite, Anambra State. Her we train our postulants for one year to prepare them for the experiences ahead. The students are exposed to certain information about the congregation and our way of life. |

ST. Justin Seminary
This is an internal seminary (similar to a novitiate). It is located at Ogobia in Benue State. Our seminarists are trained here for the ‘canonical’ twelve unbroken months, to maste deeply the Vincentian spirituality and charism. The internal seminary is an important aspect of our formation. |
|
Blessed Ghebre Michael House
Our seminarians studying philosophy undergo formation in Blessed Ghebre Michael House, Ikot Ekpene. They attend philosophy class in St. Joseph Major Seminary, which is not far from our formation house where the major part of their formation takes place. Students undergo formation in this house for four years. After which they go on a one year field experience. |
|
One Year Apostolic Experience
At this point in formation, seminarians are engaged in practical field work within the circumference of our apostolate. They are assigned to various parts of our apostolate, where they will garner experience for one year. |
|
The Theology House
This fifth stage of formation is undergone in Maryland, Enugu. Here seminarians attend theology classes at Bigard Memorial Seminary (Enugu), but are fully groomed in our theology house. At this level, students are prepared for four years to eventually make their final commitment. |
|
Ongoing Formation
We believe that formation is a continuous process, therefore, our priest confreres continue their formation by attending a formation program organized by COVIAM. This is known as ‘Ongoing Formation’. This formation program is held in Kenya. There are also special seminars and lectures organized in Nigeria in respect to ongoing formation for our confreres. |
